Neil Wilson - The Guitarist

Home

Scotland's top performing classical and world guitarist Neil Wilson graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (R.S.A.M.D.) in 2004. He has been playing the guitar from the age of five and playing professionally for eight years.

Neil first came to the public's attention when, at the age of 13, he appeared on Scottish Television playing classical and world guitar music.

In May 2004 Neil performed Rodrigo's Concerto de Aranjuez with Royal Scottish National Orchestra in the Henry Wood Hall, Glasgow.

He was invited to play at the Kirkmichael International Guitar Festival by international jazz musician Martin Taylor. Martin heard Neil and was so impressed he asked him to play a recital at the festival.

Neil regularly performs guitar recitals throughout Scotland and travels to England to perform several times each year. His venues include House for an Art Lover (Glasgow), Paxton House (Berwick) summer festival of classical music, Dundee Repertory theatre, the Venezuelan Embassy (London), the Dundee International Guitar Festival, the Kirkmichael International Festival, Inveraray Castle (residence of the Duke of Argyll) and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Last year Neil performed over 30 concerts including three in New Zealand. In September 2006 Neil performed 'live' on Metro Radio, Newcastle.

Neil draws his repertoire from a wide range of music around the world and includes many virtuoso guitar pieces from traditional and contemporary sources. His music includes compositions by J.S.Bach, Rodrigo, Albeniz, Tarrega, Paganinni and Piazzola.

His first C.D. was released in October last year. It includes compositions by Dowland, Tarrega, J.S.Bach, Piazzola and Assad and one of his own compositions, entitled "Mother".

As well as performing music within the classical repertoire he has collaborated with several other musicians from other genres of music, including Lev Atlas, the Russian virtuoso principal violinist with Scottish Opera.

In September 2007 Neil was appointed visiting teacher of guitar at Strathclyde University, Glasgow.

Neil is acknowledged as a gifted guitarist who displays outstanding technical fluency, maturity and expression.

Review by "Three Weeks " at the 2006 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
"As soon as he begins his complete mastery of the guitar is beyond question, matched only by his obvious love for the music he plays - a programme of his personal favourites. From the fragility of the Renaissance to the bold passion of contemporary Spanish and Argentinean composers, he creates a musical picture, full of light and depth with intricate detail. The experience leaves you feeling awestruck and deeply satisfied in equal measures - a rare find." Read the full review on Neil's news page.

Review by Joe McAvoy, The Sunday Times,
of Neil’s performance of Albeniz’s suite Espanola and Radames Sonata for cello and guitar with Naomi Berrill, Paxton House concert July 2005. “Confident, delivering a masterly execution of the Suite Espanola. He excelled on the difficult Sevilla which he handled with due delicacy.” The Radames Sonata – “a measure of any good festival is that you encounter something quite unlike anything you’ve ever heard before. For me this was it.”

Review by "Three Weeks" the Edinburgh Fringe newspaper of Neil's performance at the Fringe on 10th. August 2005. He shows "Mastery and flair for the instrument. Wilson looks and plays like a true classical artist - he dispels the barrier between audience and performer."

Review by Leo Forde for The Sunday Mail of Neil's performance at Glasgow's West End 27th. June 2008. "The Scots guitarist displayed his technical brilliance at this intimate performance. Wilson's passion for the music shone through on works by Piazzola, Tarrega and Bach."

What members of the audience have said:
"Probably the best classical guitar recital I have ever heard. I even bought his CD at the end - a first time for everything! Well worth listening to - it is amazing how Neil can play the classical guitar so well." Gwynneth, Edinburgh Fringe, 2008

"I was one of many amateur guitarists in the audience to be inspired by your technique and musicianship. I loved the Bach but could never aspire to play it nor many of the other virtuosic pieces you played." Ian, Edinburgh Festival 2008.
